The Edlund 1 “old reliable” manual can opener has a quality that cannot be beat! This No. 1 can opener features a plated steel base for cans up to 11 inches tall and a plastic bushing for lower turning force and easier opening. The melonite arbor provides greater rust resistance to make gear changing easy and the plastic base insert provides smooth glide action and reduces wear on the opener shaft. We received the above can opener, it is a very heavy duty opener. The quality of the material that it is made from is very durable. With the almost 1000 employees and us doing big luncheons, it is going to come in handy. Thank you, Viola :)
This product is an absolute win. Simple, affordable and effective. We open over 50 cans a day and it does it with ease. Do not hesitate!
Unfortunately, the manufacturer discontinued selling each replacement component on its own and have substituted all parts to these kits, which can also be beneficial down the road: https://www.etundra.com/restaurant-parts/prep-equipment-parts/can-openers/edlund-kt1100-number-1-knife-and-gear-replacement-kit/
You can't really replace just the knob. Once it's installed, it's not really going to come off. I'd recommend getting this handle assembly that I'm attaching. It's in stock too as of 12/13/2012!! https://www.etundra.com/restaurant-parts/prep-equipment-parts/can-openers/edlund-a507-handle-assembly/
The can opener base is approximately 4" wide x 7" long x 3-1/8" high. Here is a dimensional drawing for you if you're interested. http://www.etundra.com/ShowDocument.aspx?fileId=285946
One reason you might be getting metal shavings could be due to a dull blade. If you've had the can opener for a little while the blade may be dull and need to be replaced. I'm currently in talks with an Edlund tech. support staff member and we're going to figure out what's causing the metal flakes. Other than a dull blade we'd need to know the model number of your can opener is to further assist you.
We mounted ours to our countertop.
Yes, this can opener comes with a base that mounts to tables. You can look at the opManual.pdf in the "Learn More" tab above for a picture of what it looks like when mounted.
To remove the gear, place a soft nail or screw on the right side of the gear between the gear and the edge of the gear slot, to hold gear, and turn handle and arbor counterclockwise.
