Commercial shelving is critical to your storage and organization needs. Whether you're saving ingredients for later, organizing and cataloging stock, or freezing leftovers for another day, commercial shelving is a great way to not lose your mind. Not only will commercial shelving ensure you meet proper health and sanitation practices, but it can also help you reduce and rotate stock more effectively. At Tundra Restaurant Supply, you can find a variety of commercial shelving units such as wire shelving, polypropylene/polymer plastic shelving units, as well as specialty shelving units like security racks and dunnage racks.
Dunnage racks can hold as much as 2,000 pounds and often plug into your existing shelving unit seamlessly. Commercial dunnage racks are ideal for storing those heavier bulk items (like flour) up and off of the ground—keep in mind that health inspectors do not like seeing any food product on the ground, and doing so could hurt you at your next inspection.
Helping you to make the most out of your otherwise wasted vertical space, commercial kitchen shelving is a lifesaver in your pantry and walk in.
Types of Commercial Shelving Units
Commercial wire shelving is probably the most prevalent type of commercial shelving on the market. Easy to install and affordable, chrome-plated wire shelving lets air circulate easily around your product, preventing the growth of mold and condensation accumulation. The downside of wire shelving however, is because it can be prone to rusting. Though chrome-plated wire shelving is rust resistant, it is not rust proof. And trust us, the health inspector will not be happy to see wire shelving in a moist environment like your walk in cooler.
If you require a wire shelving option in a humid area (like your walk in), look to epoxy coated wire shelving. This durable coating is rust proof and offers you big protection against corrosion. Unfortunately, the drawback to epoxy coated wire shelving is that the coating itself may wear off over time—particularly if you are storing steam pans, cookware and other metal objects. Like traditional chrome-plated wire shelving, most epoxy coated shelves only hold up to 150 pounds.
For the ultimate upgrade in shelving, new polypropylene/polymer plastic shelving units (like Camshelving®) offer the best in durability in both dry and humid environments. These durable commercial shelving units are constructed in metal but feature a thick coating of plastic which makes it lightweight, rust proof and are dishwasher safe. With polypropylene/polymer plastic shelving units you have a choice between solid or vented shelves, and many can hold anywhere from 600 to 3,200 pounds!
