Q:I have an older Vitamix 5000, model #VM0103. When I adjust the blending speed in the 1-6 range the motor speeds up and slows down. It almost sounds like there is a short in the switch. The upper speeds are fine and there is full power. Any ideas what the problem is? Motor? Bearings? Switch? Thanks!
A:I have fixed this 2 or 3 times over the past 15+ years with ours. Loosen the setscrew holding the variable speed knob on and pull it. insert the "straw" of a quality spray can of penetrating oil (I used SeaFoam and later WD40) firmly into each of the two tiny holes behind it and squirt it. Then turn the shaft back and forth several times. Repeat. wipe the shaft and put the knob back on and tighten. Turn the shaft back and forth some more times. Let it sit for maybe 15 minutes, then start the machine and work the knob and the speed should start working normally.
A:I would recommend contacting Vitamix directly to help troubleshoot your specific issue. Unfortunately, as this is a residential unit, all service requests should go through the manufacturer directly to avoid and warranty violations. They can be reached at 800.848.2649
