The Difference Between Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Compressors?
The main purpose of your ice machine's compressor is to draw heat away from the refrigeration lines. Water-cooled compressors require an additional water line that runs alongside the condenser. While they tend to be quiet and operate efficiently in hot environments (because they aren't heating an already hot kitchen) many local conservation codes prohibit the use of water-cooled compressors.
Conversely, air-cooled compressors circulate air over the condenser and many are ENERGY STAR® compliance. That said, air-cooled compressors are costly to operate and tend to be noisier than their water-cooled counterparts.
